JSW – responsible development through innovation,
investment and education

In 2015-2017, Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa implemented a profound restructuring process aimed at regaining profitability and liquidity in a tough market environment. In this period, the Company made a number of difficult decisions in order to prevent bankruptcy, including the decision to sell its stake in Spółka Energetyczna Jastrzębie S.A. and coke production assets of Wałbrzyskie Zakłady Koksownicze Victoria S.A. Currently, after a period of thorough restructuring, in order to improve the competitiveness and flexibility of the Company’s production, the JSW Management Board intends to boost development through innovation and investment.

A key factor expected help achieve this development is the establishment of the Jastrzębie Center for Innovation and Development which is now beginning to operate in Silesia as JSW INNOWACJE.

Eventually, the Jastrzębie Center for Innovation and Development (JSW Innowacje) will become a comprehensive research and development facility for the whole JSW Group.

The operations of JSW Innowacje will cover all phases of research and development activities of the JSW Group: from research to projects, environmental impact assessments, feasibility studies and operational supervision. JSW Innowacje’s intended major research objectives include:

  • extension of the useful life of production assets
  • exercise of control over the quality of the process
  • improvement in the productivity of mining assets
  • safety and environmental protection
  • revitalization of post-industrial areas and utilization of waste
  • innovation-driven improvement in profitability
  • development of human resources in the JSW Group

As a Katowice-based organization, JSW Innowacje will take advantage of its geographical location to involve into cooperation with JSW the scientific and research communities from Katowice, Gliwice and Kraków with a view to stimulating the development of the whole JSW Group.

JSW Innowacje will launch its operations during the International Mining Forum 2017 organized by JSW, entitled “Mining of the Future – New Problems and Solutions”.

The Forum, whose 2017 edition will be hosted by Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa, was established in 2004 by the Polish Academy of Sciences and the AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków. It is anticipated that IMF 2017 hosted by JSW will be a platform for the exchange of scientific concepts and practical engineering solutions in an international setting with the participation of mining industry representatives from Europe and beyond.

IMF 2017 will be held in Jastrzębie-Zdrój at KWK Pniówek and the event’s main organizer will be the Association of Mining Engineers and Technicians, Rybnik Branch.

This year’s edition of the Forum will be held from 28 to 30 June 2017 and a very attractive item on the agenda will be an opportunity for IMF participants to visit operating JSW mines and learn the specifics of their operation, including the applied techniques and technologies.
