centy Choroszewski. Further hints about the existence of
Carbon formations were given by Jan Samsonowicz who
conducted geological works in the area between 1922
and 1929. Basing on this research Samsonowicz created
a map of hypothetical existence of Carbon formations in
Western Wolyn and Southern Polesie.
In 1937 State Geological Institute started exploratory
works in the area. Between 1938 and 1939 eleven deep
boreholes were drilled, most of which confirmed Sam-
sonowicz’s hypothesis.
In 1946 geological authorities of contemporary USSR
started geological and exploratory works in Sokal and
Wolyn Volodymyr areas. As a result of these works exis-
tence of mineable coal deposit was confirmed and area
suitable for exploitation were selected.
In Poland, as a result of Jan Samsonowicz’s initiative,
exploratory borehole was drilled in Chelm Lubelski. This
borehole confirmed Carbon formation between the depth
of 580 and 1207 m.
Since 1959 Geological Institute conducted a wide range
of geophysical works and drilled 6 deep boreholes, which
created a basis for first synthetic estimation of geological
structure of Lublin area.
Further works were carried out since 1964 and confirmed
existence of Carbon formations in the area located be-
tween the lines drawn through Parczew-Kock and Chelm-
Rejowiec.
On 6th June 1965 a borehole in Bogdanka near Leczna
found first coal seam. Samples were taken. Ten years later,
in 1975 miners from Silesia came to this place and started
a construction of the first mine in this area.
The discovery of the deposit in LZW itself, according to
prof. Marek Niec, was a huge success on European scale
and a masterpiece of deposit exploration art.
Documentation of the deposit in Lublin Coal Basin was
the crowning jewel of the exploration works. The documen-
tation was prepared by Geological Institute in Sosnowiec
in 1972.

DECISION ABOUT BUILDING A MINE
The intensive geological works conducted in the 60s. of
20th century allowed to separate a 1000 km
2
area called
Central Coal Region (CRW). It was characterized by the
most advantageous deposit conditions in which a poten-
tial for building mines was recognized.
The first administrative decision, which allowed launch-
ing mining works in the deposit, was made in June 1971.
